John Edwin and the Banjodasha Hillbillies

In 2011, after being on the road doing musical performances in different  constellations Peter Danielsson, alias John Edwin, made up his mind and decided to go solo. He put up an Onemanvaudeville – a show containing bluegrass, folk- and countrymusic on fiddle and banjo - that he weaved together with flatfootdancing, like his great influence John Hartford did in the 70 th’s. He also learned to play clawhammer and bought a fretless banjo. ” I transformed myself into John Edwin with great passion and belief in convincing the Sweden folks in my unique style ”As time went by he also began to include his own songs in the show which were greatly appreciated by the audience. This was the origin of John Edwin and the Banjodasha Hillbillies.

In parallel with the diligent touring he continued to write new songs and some of them was saved for a better purpose. When he in 2018 met the musician Kenneth Bakkelund they formed Banjodasha Hillbillies and invented a new country/folk sound based on fretless banjo and electric guitar.

Their debut album “Divine life of Punarvasu” is written by John Edwin with a unique sound created by a fretless banjo and an electric guitar. The lyrics often contain a spiritual theme and sometimes refers to astrological terms and Yoga philosophy. The albums eleven tracks are based on the sixth song  “Can I ever reach Moksha when I cannot reach my toe” where the word Moksha ( spiritual enlightenment ) ismentioned in the same phrase as the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe. The word Punarvasu is borrowed from the Vedic astrology Nakshatra system and refers to the two brightest stars in the constellation of Gemini Castor and Pollux. It serves as an alternative name to Nirvana for the albu’s main character, questioner and Yogi : John Pigeonpose. The music is performed by John Edwin & the Banjodasha Hillbillies which are :

John Edwin alias Peter Danielsson: five string banjo, fretless banjo, vocals & acoustic guitar
Kenneth Bakkelund – electric guitars
Pedro Blom – Ukuele bass
Jörgen Andersson – snare drums

The album was recorded October 2019 and April 2020 at Sensus studios in Östersund, Sweden.
